With three new wide releases opening below $8 million, last weekend’s top three films were this weekend’s top three. We’ll see if AfAId or Reagan wins, places and/or shows next weekend. Otherwise, this is the market as it exists until Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice kicks off the post-summer season with a It Chapter Two or possibly It Chapter One level domestic launch. As a lifelong Tim Burton fan who wishes more folks showed up to Big Eyes, Big Fish, Frankenweenie and Sweeney Todd, that gives me mixed feelings. Michael Keaton’s recent statements about A) not toning down the title character’s discomforting lechery and, more importantly, B) not giving him too much screentime offer a measured optimism.

I went long on The Crow because that was a decades-in-the-making and entirely predictable disaster that should be a turning point in terms of Hollywood pretending that remakes/reboots of this nature are actually commercially successful. However, there was quite a bit more to discuss this weekend, including a robust overseas run for Alien Romulus, which made it this weekend’s top global grosser.
