The Fall Guy topped the domestic box office with a $10.4 million Friday gross. Much has been made of the fact that the Ryan Gosling/Emily Blunt action comedy is the first non-Marvel movie to open the summer movie season since Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible III in 2006. It’s the first non-sequel and/or non-franchise flick to open the summer movie season since Kingdom of Heaven in 2005. And while no one expected an opening on par with the last 20 years of Spider-Man flicks or Avengers epics, this isn’t a sterling performance, even on its own comparative terms. The opening day is below that of The Lost City ($10.5 million in 2022) and Bullet Train ($12.9 million in 2022), while its likely over/under $29 million opening weekend will fall short of those two films’ $30 million weekend launches.
