Box Office: 5 Hot Takes From a (Mostly) Super $200 Million Weekend
Small(er) domestic drops for holdovers like 'Jurassic World 4' and 'F1' imply that not everyone was merely sitting back and waiting for 'Superman'
Superman opened with $122 million in North America and $217 million worldwide. Read all about it HERE. Otherwise, Clark Kent’s robust revival accounted for 62% of a $200 million domestic weekend total. That was 61% above the same frame last year. That was the frame, if you recall, during which Despicable Me 4 topped again with $43 million as Longlegs shocked us all with a jaw-dropping $23 million opening. Inflation notwithstanding, this is the first time this specific post-holiday weekend has topped $200 million since 2016.
That was when Universal and Illumination’s The Secret Life of Pets set a (still holding) record by being the first wholly original movie to open above $100 million. Anyway, while Superman did its thing well enough (at least presuming decent legs over the next month), the rest of the crowd were not going to stand here and wait. Whether Jurassic World 4 and F1, in fact, uh, held onto the wings of eagles as we watched them fly away has yet to be confirmed.
