Box Office: 'Mufasa' Tops MLK With $16M Fri-Mon Gross While 'Sonic 3' Passes $420M and 'Moana 2' Tops $1 Billion
Meanwhile, 'Babygirl' joins 'Anora' and 'Den of Thieves 2' in the "just over $30 millionw worldwide" club and 'Nosferatu' passes $155 million worldwide.
In holdover news (One of Them Days and Wolf Man grosses can be found HERE), Mufasa: The Lion King passed $200 million domestic over the weekend and dropped just 19% over the Fri-Sun weekend while likely “winning” the Fri-Mon frame. That will bring its domestic total to $211 million, over six times its $35 million opening weekend, as it aims to displace Wonka ($218 million from a $39 million debut in 2023) on the list of “live-action” musicals. With $588 million worldwide following a $35 million global weekend, it should zoom past $600 million worldwide sometime this week and, with little in the way of competition or even tentpole screen-grab, might pass $650 million globally by the end.
Sonic the Hedgehog grossed $8.6 million (-24%) over the weekend for a likely $11.9 million holiday haul and a $219 million domestic total. With $420 million worldwide, it will soon pass Rampage ($103 million domestically, $156 million in China and $428 million worldwide), Detective Pikachu ($144 million/$93 million/$430 million) and Warcraft ($47 million/$220 million/$440 million) to become top among live-action video game adaptations. While China was previously a boon for video game flicks like Resident Evil 6 ($159 million) and Tomb Raider ($94 million), Sonic 3 has earned $3.4 million there. It should pass Gladiator II ($460 million on a $250 million budget). Notwithstanding inflation, Sonic 3 is also about to become Paramount’s 17th biggest domestic earner.
