No IMAX? No Problem! - 'Sinners' Tops $200M At Global Box Office
With a mere 27% drop from last Friday, Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan's vampire flick will be at that magic 2.5x-the-budget milestone by the end of this sentence.
Thunderbolts may have started the summer and won the weekend, but the season, in terms of pop culture zeitgeist and FOMO moments, still belongs to the Sinners. On Friday, Ryan Coogler’s R-rated vampire flick earned another $9.5 million, bringing its domestic total to $156 million in 15 days. That was a Friday-to-Friday drop of just 27%, despite losing its IMAX screens (and whatever PLFs it had left) to the Marvel machine.
You’ll never believe this, but all of the online hand-wringing and morally framed nonsense about big bad Disney stealing IMAX screens that “belonged” to the R-rated horror romp (there are these things called… contracts) amounted to little more than patronizing, virtue-signaling idiocy. Yes, it’ll get those 70mm IMAX screens back on the weekend of May 16 (#Justice4FinalDestinationBloodlines, I suppose?), but that’s a luxury rather than a necessity. With $51 million overseas, Sinners has officially passed $207 million worldwide.
With a likely $34.5 million (-24.5%) third-weekend gross, the Michael B. Jordan-starring original will finish Sunday night with $181 million domestically and around $240 million globally. If 2.5x the budget is a rule of thumb for theatrical profitability, then—as it zooms past $225 million globally by the end of this sentence— that’s “the ballgame.” Even if, as reported here and there, it cost closer to $105 million than $90 million (all that garlic is more expensive thanks to you-know-who), just give it a few more days to pass $263 million.
