Box Office: 'Sinners' Tops 'Minecraft' With $19.2 Million Friday
Whether or not it "wins" the weekend, Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan's R-rated period-piece horror flick might earn this decade's biggest debut for an original movie.
At least for one day, Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan’s Sinners is the top movie at the domestic box office. With a solid $19.2 million on Friday, Warner Bros. Discovery’s $90 million, R-rated, original horror flick debuted slightly ahead of the $16 million third-Friday gross for Warner Bros. Discovery’s $150 million, PG-rated video game-based comedy. A Minecraft Movie might “win” the weekend with around $45 million, with Sinners placing second with over/under $43 million. However, even assuming Sinners doesn’t pull a weekend multiplier closer to Us ($71 million from a $28 million Friday) than Nope ($44 million from a $19.5 million Friday) to come out on top, the rank is less important than the raw revenue accrued by a given film. That’s, of course, beyond both of this weekend’s biggies being from the same studio.
The slow-burn thriller earned a 5/5 from PostTrak along with an A from CinemaScore. That included an A+ from the 2% that represented the under-18 crowd. Kudos to the parents who brought their kids along and/or to the unaccompanied minors who bought tickets to A Minecraft Movie (or King of Kings if they had a suitably droll sense of humor) and snuck in. Goddman heroes, every one of you. It played 59% male and 82% over 25. With $6.9 million overseas, we’re probably looking at an over/under $65 million global debut and (presuming a 3x multiplier) $200 million global cume. I’d argue that’s just (barely?) good enough for a title that (IP ownership reversion after 25 years notwithstanding) should have a healthy post-theatrical life and bring the requested prestige to David Zaslav’s Warner Bros. Discovery.
