Friday Box Office: 'Star Wars III' Tops 'Accountant 2' And 'Until Dawn'
Thanks to ‘Sinners,’ decent openers and strong holdovers, this should be the biggest last-weekend-before-summer frame ever. More movies = more money. Who knew?!
Sinners wasn’t the only big game in town this weekend, as a handful of newbies opened with good-to-great initial domestic earnings. This domestic weekend is expected to total around $139 million. That will be +111% from the same pre-summer frame in 2024, when Challengers was the top earner with $15 million. Aside from 2018 and 2019, since (let’s be honest) Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame were summer releases that opened early to coincide with their overseas launches, this will be the biggest late April/early summer weekend since 2011, when… uh… Fast Five opened with $85 million and prematurely kick-started the summer season just before Marvel’s Thor. If we’re not counting “before the starter pistol” summer launches, this will be the biggest “last weekend before summer” (sans inflation) in recorded box office history.
