Box Office: 'Furiosa' Plunges 71% As 'Garfield' Tops With Mere $4M Friday
So... those of us who knew what we were talking about were correct last week when proclaiming the 'Mad Max Saga' the next 'Solo' or 'Lightyear'-style disaster.
Despite a week’s worth of almost pathological denial that, no, a $170 million movie that opened below $59 million worldwide wasn’t going to be a hit, the proof is in the pudding. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga earned $3.05 million on Friday, dropping 71% and falling behind The Garfield Movie again. Not that the Sony toon is a break-out smash either, with $3.75 million (-55%) taking the top spot in this shamefully barren weekend. The Chris Pratt-led animated flick will top the weekend with $14 million (-41%) for a $51.5 million ten-day domestic cume. The Anya-Taylor Joy/Chris Hemsworth sci-fi prequel will earn around $10.8 million (-59%) for a $49.8 million ten-day total. Again, we don’t have to like it, but the math is the math. The comparatively barren weekend, lacking a Beyond the Spider-Verse ($121 million) or a combo of Godzilla: King of the Monsters ($48 million) and Rocketman ($26 million), won’t crack $70 million total.
