Box Office: ‘Minecraft' Tops $300 Million, Reducing Pressures Placed On 'Superman'
If WBD can pull tentpole-sized grosses from 'Barbie,' 'Wonka' and 'Dune,' we should care only so much whether they can relaunch another DC Comics cinematic universe.
Must there be a Superman (movie)?
In a skewed coincidence, this year’s “Superman Day” arrives concurrently as Warner Bros. Discovery and Legendary’s A Minecraft Movie passes $300 million in North America. The Jack Black-starring video game flick just became the biggest domestic earner since Disney’s Deadpool & Wolverine last July. With $630 million worldwide heading into weekend three, it’s now well past Beetlejuice Beetlejuice ($455 million) and just over/under the recent WBD likes of Godzilla x Kong ($571 million), Wonka ($634 million) and Dune Part Two ($714 million). It also represents a massive sigh of relief for James Gunn and Peter Safran. When a silly Jumanji knock-off based on a relatively recent video game can pull in to-tier tentpole grosses, does, as I wrote 15 years ago, the world still *need* a Superman movie?
