Box Office: How Many More Times Must Warner Bros. Save Movie Theaters?
After 'Minecraft' and 'Sinners,' DeLuca and Abdy should be safe for now, while 'Superman' can afford to just be okay as WB "rescues theaters" (or tries to) for the... ninth time (?) since August 2020.
Sinners earned another $4.15 million on Tuesday, up 34% from yesterday but down 40% from last Tuesday. That brings its total to $187 million in North America, meaning it will pass John Wick: Chapter 4 ($187.1 million from a $73 million debut in 2023) by the end of this sentence, vaulting into the top 25 among all R-rated films in unadjusted domestic earnings. Oh, and with $960,000 yesterday and $399.9 million total, A Minecraft Movie is passing $400 million domestically by the end of this sentence.
What does this mean for Warner Bros. Discovery? First, Superman is now officially “just another big tentpole” instead of, even presuming the best, a do-or-die release. Second, Mike DeLuca and Pam Abdy are pretty safe from being arbitrarily canned by WBD CEO David Zaslav. Third, how many times does WB have to “save theaters” (or at least try to) amid the 2020s before it starts getting some credit?
