Even adjusted for inflation, the estimated $78 million Fri-Mon launch is in line with the three-day, five-day or, uh, 11-day debuts of the last five Tom Cruise-starring sequels.

Paramount is affirming that Mission: Impossible – The Final Conflict has earned $64 million in its Fri-Sun portion of what should be an over/under $78 million Fri-Mon Memorial Day weekend launch. That’s a record for the 29-year-old franchise. How does that compare to the earlier installments when adjusted for inflation? Like Paramount’s Star Trek series (whose first two films broke the opening weekend record with $11 million in 1979 and $14 million in 1982), the first two Tom Cruise-as-Ethan Hunt installments were received – at least on their respective opening weekends – as record-breaking titans before settling into “still good, but not the king of the castle” status. And when comparing the opening weekends, even noting inflation, Final Reckoning is thus far in line with the Mission: Impossible franchise as it has existed since 2006.
