Universal Denies Us Our Promised Spielberg Vs. 'Avengers' And 'Star Wars' Summer 2026 Box Office Showdown
I'm not mad, I'm just (as the Daniels' latest needs a new release date) disappointed!
Universal has announced that their still-untitled “event film from Steven Spielberg” will no longer open in the key pre-Memorial Day weekend slot in summer 2026. No, it will now move to June 12, 2026. The David Koepp-penned sci-fi flick, which may or may not involve aliens, will star Josh O’Connor, Emily Blunt, Colman Domingo, Colin Firth and Eve Hewson (who I first noticed in Spielberg’s Bridge of Spies a decade ago). If I’m slightly disappointed, existing relationships between Spielberg, Jon Favreau and the Star Wars brand notwithstanding, it’s because I loved the notion of a big, presumably excellent (hot take - that Spielberg guy makes movies goodly) non-franchise tentpole opening right in between Avengers: Doomsday in early May and The Mandalorian and Grogu over Memorial Day weekend.
