Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire is currently flirting with an over/under $70 million domestic opening weekend. It’s doing well overseas, including a halfway decent $13.3 million opening day in China. Granted, that’s 34% below the $21 million Friday (amid a $70 million opening weekend in March of 2021) that greeted Godzilla Vs. Kong in China, but no one should be surprised. This second Adam Wingard-directed MonsterVerse movie, Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire, may earn over/under $70 million over its domestic Fri-Sun weekend and around $40 million over its Fri-Sun China debut. It essentially switching places with Godzilla Vs. Kong (which earned $50 million over its Wed-Sun domestic opening) sums up Hollywood’s box office fate in China during the 2020s.
