With another $4.63 million on New Year’s Day, up 26% from Tuesday despite arriving on PVOD, Universal’s Wicked Part One has earned $437.6 million in North America and over $640 million worldwide. Along with strong reviews and white-hot buzz, the Jon M. Chu-directed musical fantasy is already the top-earning Broadway adaptation domestically (ahead of Grease) and worldwide (ahead of Mamma Mia!).
It’s the fourth-biggest musical ever in North America behind just Frozen II ($477 million in 2019) and Disney’s live-action remakes of Beauty and the Beast ($504 million in 2017) and The Lion King ($543 million in 2019). Once it passes the unadjusted $439 million totals of E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial (counting reissues), it’ll be Universal’s third-biggest domestic earner of all time, behind only The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($574 million in 2023) and Jurassic World ($652 million in 2015).
Once it surpasses E.T. and the original Star Wars ($461 million, counting reissues), Wicked Part One will become the fifth biggest domestic release ever—behind Barbie, Black Panther, Titanic and Avatar—that is not a sequel, prequel, reboot or remake of an existing theatrical property. Wicked: For Good is set to rock and/or roll in theaters next November.
