Unless Lisa Frankenstein just completely misses the mark on Super Bowl weekend then this will probably remain the worse weekend of the entire year. Yes, the dual strikes are why this weekend was so low, but it's still frustrating to watch.

Also, I am legit praying that Dune: Part Two will become a breakout sequel. From what I saw when tickets went on sale, there's strangely not a whole lot of traction going on from where I'm at (outside of the premium screens), but I really hope it picks up steam. It's the kind of film that's basically advertising itself as a must-see event in the theater.

I expect DUNE 2 to do very well, but "very well" for DUNE 2 is WONKA-level box office. And yes, in terms of advance tickets, the PLF screens tend to overrepresent general audience demand since those who race to buy tickets early are obviously going to be aiming for Imax or Dolby. Anecdotally, when I couldn't get decent seats for even generic 2-D SPIDER-MAN NO WAY HOME showings on opening weekend for me and the three kids (I had already seen it), that's when I knew it was going to flirt with FORCE AWAKENS numbers.

You have no idea how many times I check the AMC website just to see how many people are buying tickets near my area. It'll at least give me a general idea if a movie could break out or not.

Also, here's a quick funny story. Even while tickets were seelling out fast, I didn't even think No Way Home would make as much as Force Awakens on opening weekend. That's after it took me more than THREE hours to get good seats. Then once I saw the $50M Thursday number, I knew we were in store for something crazy. Low and behold, $260M opening and a domestic gross of more than $800M and a worldwide total of $1.9B.

All I really care about at this point is if it makes enough money to justify Dune: Messiah. I'm an inveterate lover of divise movies that cause major arguments on the internet and many people will find Messiah majorly upsetting. My one caveat is that if they stick to the book, it'll require major acting from Momoa, like Shakespearan-level, Daniel Day Lewis-level acting. Messiah is really where the books become great literature. I read the synopsis before I read it and thought it would be cornball, but I'll be damned if it wasn't like very top tier stuff.

AMC's app wouldn't let me purchase my tickets for DUNE 2 IMAX despite trying for 5 hours. Its a shame they haven't figured that out yet and now I'm going to have to wait for another showtime. I think Dune 2 will break out but not to $1 Billion dollar levels. I'm curious to see if the people who watched it only on HBO Max day and date will show up to the theaters.

Another box officer commentator over on Twitter has been hinting at some possible studio manipulation of figures for "The Beekeeper." Have you heard anything to that effect?

Couldn't care less. Rank is immaterial beyond trivia. If it "only" made, I dunno, $7.2 millon it's still a terrific showing.

Ah, I understand. That's fair enough. I didn't realize they were talking about something so minor

Oh I don't know what the accusation is, but I'm guessing the debate is about whether Mean Girls or Beekeeper is actually the #1 movie this weekend. And yeah, that to me is mere trivia.

(Sorry, my initial response reads more confrontational and crankier than I intended)
