The Tim Burton-directed and Michael Keaton/Winona Ryder/Jenna Ortega-starring sequel began its global theatrical run with a promising $145.5 million global debut.
I think it may leg out better in Europe than Twisters, simply because of the softer competition, now that the summer biggies are further along in their run.
Also, I think people will just like it better. The opening in America is huge, this is the kind of film where, if there were a Bettlejuice 3 in the next few years, Id expect a much bigger opening internationally.
You may be right! In America this movie is a multi generational event, whereas over here young people are discovering Beetlejuice through Wednesday and other more recent stuff. So if they can turn it into a real franchise, with another movie in a couple of years, there is a lot to win here.
Just for shits and giggles, this is also one of three Warner Bros. movies to open over $100M that is not from either DC or the Harry Potter universe. So, I guess this is another great example of WB being a whole lot more than just Batman and Harry Potter. We'll see if A Minecraft Movie (despite the trailer not leaving a good first impression at all) can continue that narrative.
Also, just a little correction, Barbie opened to $162M, not $169M. I think you're getting it mixed up with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II, which opened to the latter number.
The Minecraft reaction bemuses me. My kids were never into the game, so its appeal was lost on me. (all of my Autism specctrum nieces & nephews etc. adore(d) it though.
However, Lego movie style surprises notwithstanding, I'm really not sure what a live-action Minecraft movie was supposed to look like? I also wonder why, given that it was aimed at children, what were people expecting. The target audience seems into it. 🤷🏾♂️(yes I know the game has been around so long that the average player is now 24, but)...
